Service Awards- Recognizing Faculty & Staff

Dr. John Curran gets a thank you hug from Ms. Billie Lee after she received her recognition award for 15 years of service. Ms. Lee is a member of the Revenue Cycle Operations team of USF Physicians Group.

Last week, USF Health honored 277 faculty and staff for their years of service – honorees who’ve been a part of the USF Health family from 5 to 35 years. Awards were presented by the deans in the USF colleges of medicine, nursing and public health – Dean Stephen Klasko, Dean Patricia Burns and Dean Donna Petersen. Also stepping in to assist with the awards was Dr. John Curran, Associate Vice President of Academic & Faculty Affairs, USF Health.

From L to R: Dr. John Curran, recognized for his 35 years of service in the College of Medicine, and Dr. Philip Shenefelt, recognized for his 20 years of service.

One honoree is known for his expertise in the intersection of dermatology and people’s beliefs about their skin and appearance. Honored as a 20-year employee, Philip Shenefelt, MD, Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, sees patients for general dermatology and allergic contact dermatitis. But his primary research, for some ten years, has been on integrative medicine with an emphasis on hypnosis in dermatology. Dr. Shenefelt is an Approved Consultant with the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis in 2001 and diplomate with the American Board of Medical Hypnosis in January 2007. He has given presentations and published articles on aspects of hypnosis in dermatology and on broader topics in psychodermatology and in use of herbs in dermatology-and conducting research in relaxation for dermatologic surgery. “As David Spiegel, MD, said about hypnosis, it is not mind over matter, but mind matters”, said Dr. Shenefelt.

As is the case each year, the listing of honorees includes names of several faculty and staff who retired earlier this year, including Dr. Greg Nicolosi and Dr. Peter Dunne. Also recognized was Dr. Paul Wallach, who relocated to New Jersey this summer to become Dean of the new medical school at Touro College. All were honored for their service in 2007.

From L to R: Executive Admin. Specialists Charmaine Disimile and Maria Rutter, event organizer, take a moment to stop and enjoy the evening after weeks of planning!

Congratulations to all the honorees! Special recognition goes to Maria Rutter, USF Health administrative assistant, who is tireless in her efforts to make the annual awards dinner special for every honoree at the ceremony!

From L to R: Donna Petersen, Dean of the USF College of Public Health, and Ms. Lyette Pate, recognized for her 10 years of service. Ms. Pate is an Administrative Specialist, Diversity Initiatives, College of Medicine.

From L to R: Dr. Joan Gregory, recognized for 30 years of service in the College of Nursing, received her award directly from the college’s Dean, Patricia Burns. Dean Burns was also recognized for her 10 years of service.

From L to R: Dr. John Curran presented Dr. Peter Dunne with his recognition award for 15 years of service. Dr. Dunne served as Professor and Chair Emeritus of the Department of Neurology in the College of Medicine, prior to his retirement earlier this year.
