Tampa, FL (Dec. 16, 2010) — The creative business minds behind Wikipedia and eMedicine will headline the USF Health Dean’s Lecture Series “The Medical Internet Revolution” on Thursday evening, Jan. 6, at the USF Alumni Center, USF Alumni Drive (off Fowler Ave and Leroy Collins Blvd) in Tampa.

The program, sponsored by USF Health, Tampa General Hospital and Allscripts, will begin at 7 p.m., following a 6 p.m. meet and greet reception.

Jimmy D. Wales, MA, is the founder of Wikipedia, the free web-based multilingual encyclopedia ranked among the top 10 most visited websites worldwide. Scott H. Plantz, MD, is former founder, chairman and CEO of eMedicine, Inc., a free online clinical knowledge base primarily used by 6 million physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other health professionals.

Following their presentations, Wales and Dr. Plantz will be joined in a panel discussion by Glen E. Tullman, CEO of Allscripts, a leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and health information solutions. Tullman is also co-chair of the National ePrescribing Patient Safety Initiative, a $100-million campaign to deliver free electronic prescribing to physicians across America.

The event will be a lively discussion of the internet’s impact on healthcare and the evolution from paper to electronic records, which carries the promise of fewer medical errors, improved cost effectiveness and better communication.
