Diane L Spatz, PhD, RNC, FAAN will present "Human Milk and Breastfeeding: Translating the Science into Practice," on Monday October 3, 2011 at 12:00-1:00pm as part of the College of Nursing Distinguished Lecture Series.  Dr. Spatz is Associate Professor of Health Care of Women and Childbearing Nursing – Clinician Educator, and Helen M. Shearer Term Associate Professor of Nutrition at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing. She is an internationally known expert in maternal child health and a member of the MCH Leadership Academy.  Dr. Spatz is continuing to mentor College of Nursing PhD student Jessica Brumley, CNM, MA and recent USF Nursing Associate Professor Cecilia Jevitt, CNM, PhD as they design group prenatal care focusing on optimal nutrition, caloric intake and physical activity in collaboration with an inter-professional team from the USF Medical Clinics. This mentorship is part of the prestigious national MCH Leadership Academy.

Bernadette Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/NPP, FAAN, FNAP – September 2, 2010

Bernadette Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/NPP, FAAN, FNAP will present “Igniting and Sustaining Evidence-based Practice in Healthcare and Academic Settings” on Thursday, September 2, 2010 from 12pm-1:30pm in room MDN 2007 as part of the College of Nursing Distinguished Lecture Series.

Bernadette Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/PMHNP, FNAP, FAAN is Dean and Distinguished Foundation Professor in Nursing at Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation. Dr. Melnyk is an internationally recognized expert in theory-based intervention research and evidence-based practice as well as in child and adolescent mental health. She has worked with numerous healthcare systems throughout the nation and globe to advance and sustain evidence-based practice. Dr. Melnyk’s record of extramural research and educational funding, including grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality, and HRSA totals more than 11 million dollars.

Through a series of nine randomized controlled trials, she has supported the efficacy of her COPE intervention program in improving the outcomes of critically ill/hospitalized children and premature infants and parents, which has been adopted by hospitals and insurers throughout the U.S. Her current NIH-funded RO1 grant is a randomized controlled trial testing the efficacy of her COPE/Healthy Lifestyles TEEN program to prevent overweight/obesity and depression in 800 culturally diverse teenagers in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Melnyk’s record of scholarship includes over 150 publications, two books, and numerous distinguished awards for her contributions to improving children’s health, nursing and healthcare.
