This semester the USF College of Nursing graduated a total of 194 students including two Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP), two PhDs in Nursing Science, 73 Master’s of Science (MS), and 117 Bachelor’s of Science (BS).

Rita F. D’Aoust, PhD, ANP-BC, CNE, FAANP, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director for Interprofessional Initiatives, and Interim Assistant Dean for the Master’s Programs at the USF College of Nursing, made opening remarks by welcoming graduates and their families who were celebrating an incredible milestone in their journey of lifelong learning as health professionals. Exemplar students were also recognized with several awards including Academic Excellence, Clinical Excellence, Leadership Award, Spirit of Nursing Award, and Service Award.

Later in the evening, graduates were pinned by their Clinical Collaborative team coordinators and faculty. USF College of Nursing graduates walked in the USF commencement held at the Sun Dome Saturday, May 5, 2012.

One of the highlights of any USF College of Nursing student’s career is attending their pinning ceremony. The pin each graduate receives symbolizes a rite of passage into the nursing profession and a lifelong connection to the College.

You now have the meaningful opportunity to sponsor a student’s nursing pin!

For just $50 each, you can provide a student with their nursing pin! Every nursing student pin you sponsor will include a note to the student with your name and a personal message from you, if desired. At the USF Nursing Pinning Ceremony featuring the Path of Light, graduating baccalaureate nursing students move through a lighted path, led by their nursing mentors, faculty and alumni, to ceremoniously receive their nursing pin, marking the transition from student to professional nurse.

The tradition of the Path of Light began in December 2009 when nursing alumni and faculty holding lighted candles to signify their pledge taken in the tradition of Florence Nightingale, the “Lady with the Lamp”, first led processions of nursing graduates through a lighted pathway formed by nursing alumni and faculty. Since then, the baccalaureate Nursing Pinning Ceremony, featuring the Path of Light, has become one of the College’s points of pride.

The tradition, along with the pinning ceremony, was made possible through efforts lead by Melissa Molinari Shelton ’05, ‘08, ‘11, President of the USF Nursing Alumni and Friends Society.

“All of us working on the project were so pleased with the response from alumni and graduates. I have had a number of alumni and student alumni ask how to become involved. I can’t think of a better sign of success,” said Shelton.
