University of South Florida College of Nursing BS-PhD student, Marian J. Hardwick, MS, RN, received an award from the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA)Foundation to study “Accelerated Resolution Therapy for PTSD and Sleep Disturbance.”

Hardwick was one of the only two scholars who received a $5,000-award for two years to study the effects of before and after treatment of Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) focusing on sleep disturbance. Through this research, Hardwick’s goal is to increase rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and quality of sleep in people, mainly veterans, with PTSD. USF College of Nursing Professor and Executive Director, Research Center, Kevin Kip, PhD, FAHA, will guide and mentor Hardwick throughout the study.

“Hardwick will be advancing our research and the evidence base on ART, a revolutionary new treatment for PTSD,” Dr. Kip said. “Her research will add to the evidence base by quantifying objective changes in sleep quality and function before and after treatment with ART for symptoms of psychological trauma.”

ART is being studied as an alternative to traditional PTSD treatments that use drugs or lengthy therapy sessions. The talk therapy uses back-and-forth eye movements as the patient fluctuates between talking about a traumatic scene, and using the eye movements to help process that information to integrate the memories from traumatic events. The findings of this first study of ART appear in an on-line article published June 18, 2012 in the journal Behavioral Sciences.

ART is one of the five sub-studies of the USF College of Nursing’s RESTORE LIVES: Education and Research to Rehabilitate and Restore the Lives of Veterans, Service Members, and their Families, a grant funded and administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and the Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) at Fort Detrick, MD.

APNA, founded in 1986, gives this award to members who aid scientific research and contributions which add to the knowledge and practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing. Since its start, the organization, has committed itself to the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health (PMH) nursing and wellness promotion, prevention of mental health problems, and the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disorders, according to APNA’s website.

Along with the award, Hardwick received a complimentary registration to the APNA 27th Annual Conference, which will be held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas on October 9 through 12, 2013.

“Getting funding from this grant means Dr. Kip and I are on the right track and on to something that looks to be innovative to the field of psychology,” Hardwick said. “I’m excited and look forward to this pilot study.”

USF College of Nursing Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean, Master’s Program & Academic Affairs, Brian Graves, PhD, RN, ACNP-BC, and Military Liaison, Instructor and Coordinator, Graduate Simulation, Alicia Rossiter, MSN, ARNP, FNP, PNP-BC, spoke at the webinar series to discuss strategies for teaching students to care for active duty service members, veterans, and military families.

Joining Forces, a national initiative to support and honor America’s service members and their families, designed the webinar series to educate nursing faculty that are members of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) on how to implement initiatives set forward by the campaign. More than 650 schools of nursing around the country have pledged their support to the Joining Forces campaign. One priority of this national initiative is to make health care professionals more knowledgeable about veterans and their health care needs, particularly, as they return from modern deployments with characteristic injuries.

“The USF College of Nursing contributed to the webinar series to provide educational resources and assist schools that are AACN members as they engage in curricular development,” said Rossiter. “We are transforming the healthcare, transforming the lives of our active military, veterans, and their families. USF Nursing has become known nationwide as a leader in veteran research and how to care for our veteran population. We are very fortunate to have a Dean, Associate/Assistant Deans, faculty, and staff who are so committed to veteran health and research that improves the lives of our veterans and their families as well as the many educational initiatives that have helped make USF the 4th Friendliest Military University in the country.”

AACN reached out to Graves and Rossiter as well as Senior Associate Vice President, USF Health and Dean, USF College of Nursing, Dianne Morrison-Beedy, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP, FAAN, and Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Academic Affairs and Interprofessional Initiatives, Rita D’Aoust, PhD, ACNP, ANP-BC, CNE, FAANP, FNAP, to speak at two out of seven webinar series. They were invited to participate for demonstrating leadership in military and veteran education and research and for the USF College of Nursing’s reputation as a leader in veterans healthcare. Rossiter, along with Dr. Morrison-Beedy and Dr. D’Aoust, were also part of the Joining Forces Webinar Series: Teaching Nursing Students to Care for Veterans Part VI on April 24, 2013.

“We participated to support the Joining Forces campaign,” Rossiter said. “Many colleges of nursing are looking for ways to meet the challenge to educate nurses to care for the active duty and veteran population. USF College of Nursing has become a leader in veteran health care, by creating initiatives such as RESTORE LIVES: Education and Research to Rehabilitate and Restore the Lives of Veterans, Service Members, and their Families, which helps develop life enhancing treatments through nursing research, and educate nurses with the knowledge and skills specific to the needs of treating veterans and service members. We were joining forces before Joining Forces was cool–we have had multiple veteran initiatives in place long before the Joining Forces campaign started. Because of this, other colleges and universities are looking at us to see how they can develop and implement curriculum into their programs.”

Before speaking at the webinar series, faculty members from USF College of Nursing participated in a series of military and veteran focused presentations at AACN. Rossiter presented at the AACN Baccalaureate Conference in November 2012 in San Antonio, TX, and Dr. Graves presented at the AACN Master’s Conference in March 2013 in Orlando, Florida. In addition, USF Nursing Dean Morrison-Beedy, presented at the AACN Deans Conference in March 2013 in Washington, DC.

“We are meeting the challenge–our PhD researchers are creating the knowledge; the DNPs are translating the knowledge; our nurse practitioners and nurses are delivering the care; and our nurse educators and leaders are disseminating the knowledge and educating our students,” Dr. Graves said.

In November 2012, the University of South Florida College of Nursing named Ms. Lisa Reese as the 2012 Champion of the College of Nursing for her selfless support of the College’s initiatives to support and assist the nation’s military, veterans and their families or RESTORE LIVES at USF Nursing.

The news is full of stories of veterans returning home unable to adjust to society. News headlines speak of veterans committing crimes and the tragic stories of suicides among the veterans. Some just shake their heads, saddened and tune in to another channel or flip the page in the paper. But not Lisa Reese! For Lisa, who served in the U.S. Army as a Legal Specialist in the Judge Advocate Generals (JAG) Corps, this was a call to action.

USF Nursing Lisa Reese Champion of College 2012

“We have a saying in the military,” said Lisa Reese. “We leave no one behind. Complete the mission.”

Lisa has a cause, Leave No One Behind. To her this doesn’t just mean bringing veterans home, it means helping them to re-integrate back into society.

“As a veteran I have a duty to support veterans, as an American I have an obligation to honor their service. When I served I left no one behind on the battlefield. When current veterans come home I will make sure their mission is complete and their service is honored.”

Lisa attended a meeting in February at the University of South Florida College of Nursing and “listened in awe and inspiration” to Dr. Kevin Kip, and his research team, describe the innovative work in the areas of PTSD and Biobehavioral research, and the inspirational stories of those who have participated in the studies. Kevin Kip, PhD, FAHA is Professor and Executive Director Research Center at the USF College of Nursing.

At the USF College of Nursing, Lisa found professionals who not only wanted to help veterans, but were actively engaged in studying new therapies to accomplish this. At the end of the meeting, Lisa took action, and made a contribution for Restore Lives at USF: Education and Research to Rehabilitate and Restore the Lives of Veterans, Service Members and their Families. She has also agreed to serve on an advisory board for RESTORE LIVES at USF.

“I strongly believe veterans returning from the current wars will need a lot of mental health support in their reintegration back into society. Whether it be finding a job, or finding someone to talk to about their experiences, support is key in helping them. Barriers have to be removed to allow veterans to talk about their experiences and feel comfortable in their transition back home. Restore Lives at USF is front and center in helping veterans make that transition.”

Through her timely and generous support of Restore Lives at USF, Ms. Reese is directly impacting the lives of veterans and service members, as well as furthering her cause to Leave No One Behind.

The story We Leave No One Behind was originally published in the college’s magazine Nursing on the Move in Summer 2012.

" width="262" height="257" />

Based at the USF College of Nursing, Research to Improve Emotional Health and Quality of Life among Service Members with Disabilities will support five studies designed to help soldiers overcome psychological trauma and other health problems that come from serving in combat operations. The grant is is a collaborative project with the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital and includes national participation by current and former members of the Armed Forces, clinical psychologists, nurse scientists, educators and research support personnel. The grant was awarded and will be administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research & Materiel Command and the Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center at Fort Detrick, MD. The grant is composed of five sub studies each researching a different aspect of veterans’s health issues. These sub studies include: Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Empowering Women Veterans, Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Tele-rehabilitation, Assessment of Base Rates of PTSD, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT).

“The need is overwhelming,” said principal investigator Kevin Kip, PhD, Associate Professor and Executive Director of the College of Nursing Research Center. “If all the trained therapists worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, they couldn’t begin to meet the needs of these courageous service members and veterans.”

One of the studies mentioned in the article was the Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), which is being studied as an alternative to traditional PTSD treatments that use drugs or lengthy therapy sessions. The talk therapy uses back-and-forth eye movements as the patient fluctuates between talking about a traumatic scene, and using the eye movements to help process that information to integrate the memories from traumatic events. The first findings of this study appear in an on-line article published June 18, 2012 in the journal Behavioral Sciences.

The magazine article emphasizes the USF College of Nursing’s commitment to address veterans health issues through RESTORE LIVES: Education and Research to Rehabilitate and Restore the Lives of Veterans, Service Members, and their Families. USF College of Nursing’s continuous efforts to develop life enhancing treatments through nursing research, and educate nurses with the knowledge and skills specific to the needs of the military, veterans, and their families. The ART study is an example of type of innovative research that the USF College of Nursing is developing to improve the health of our honored service members and veterans.

“The research conducted through RESTORE LIVES is unique in the nation and is critical as we now have the largest number of combat veterans reentering mainstream America since the Vietnam era. The cutting-edge therapies tested are designed to literally restore the lives of our honored soldiers and veterans,” said Dianne Morrison-Beedy PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP, FAAN, Senior Associate Vice President of USF Health and Dean of the College of Nursing.

Dr. Harris helps lead the VA’s 80,000-plus nursing personnel, but the message he will deliver at the conference is vital to all the nation’s registered nurses. While 36 percent of the nation’s 23 million veterans receive health care through the VA, the majority seek care outside of the VA health system, usually at local primary care facilities or hospitals in their communities, a 2009 U.S. VA Services report indicates. At 3-million strong, nurses comprise the nation’s largest sector of health care professionals.

“The University of South Florida College of Nursing, which has a DoD grant to treat veterans and active military who have PTSD with a new psychotherapy technique using memory to suppress triggers, plans a Veterans Health conference, Nov. 13, at their Tampa, FL, campus – the first Joining Forces event,” said Guterl in the article. “The conference will focus on nursing education and research designed to meet the needs of veterans, service members and their families.”

That psychotherapy technique is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and is currently being studied at USF Nursing as an alternative to traditional PTSD treatments that use drugs or lengthy therapy sessions.
Stamas talked about the recent ART results, which indicate substantial symptom reductions associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) including, depression, anxiety, sleep dysfunction and other physical and psychological symptoms.

“They still remember the history of this is what really happened, say out on the battlefield, but they can no longer see the images of it, and because of that, they no longer get the physiological reaction and the symptoms of the PTSD,” Stamas quoted Kevin E. Kip, PhD, FAHA, Professor and Executive Director of the USF College of Nursing Research Center. Dr. Kip is the Principal Investigator of College’s ART study.

ART is one of the five sub-studies of the USF College of Nursing’s Research to Rehabilitate/Restore the Lives of Veterans, Service Members and their Families grant funded and administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and the Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) at Fort Detrick, MD.

Kevin Kip, PhD, FAHA, Professor and Executive Director for Research Center at the University of South Florida College of Nursing, presented interim results of a randomized controlled trial of Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) at the Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) on August 15, 2012 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Dr. Kip’s ART study abstract, based exclusively on military personnel, was selected among over 600 presentation submissions. The interim results of this trial follow findings from an ART study among civilians and veterans that appeared in an on-line article published June 18, 2012 in the journal Behavioral Sciences.

In the current ongoing randomized controlled trial, ART is being compared to an Attention Control Regimen for veterans with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For this interim analysis of efficacy, veterans treated with ART had significantly greater reductions in symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and trauma-related guilt and distress compared to the Attention Control group. Similarly, 67 percent of veterans in the ART group experienced clinically meaningful improvements in symptoms of PTSD compared to just 7 percent in the control group.

Dr. Kip’s ART study abstract, based exclusively among military personnel, was selected among over 600 presentation submissions." width="310" height="387" />

“Based on the very encouraging results observed to date with the use of ART, multiple future studies are being designed and pursued including a head-to-head randomized controlled trial of ART versus Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy, which is a first-line evidence-based therapy advocated and routinely used by clinicians at the Veterans Administration for treatment of PTSD,” Dr. Kip said.
