University of South Florida Professor John Petrila, JD, LLM, spoke with WTSP Channel 10 News about the recent sale of Bayfront Medical Center to Tennessee-based Community Health Systems.
According to Petrila, hospital sales “Is a trend that has been emerging over the last 20 years, but is definitely accelerating. It’s not something that’s likely to change in our lifetimes.”
In the article, Petrila added that large hospital systems are very profitable and have major purchasing power when it comes to securing prescription drugs and medical equipment.
“Most folks think you have to get bigger and bigger.”
John Petrila serves as chair the Department of Health Policy and Management in the USF College of Public Health. The department offers more than 10 concentrations that lead to MPH, MSPH, and PhD degrees, including an online master of public health degree in public health administration. Additionally, the department offers several dual degrees, graduate certificates, and special programs.
