Public health professor Yiliang Zhu awarded a Fulbright Fellowship
Yiliang Zhu, PhD, a professor in the University of South Florida College of Public Health, is the recipient of a Fulbright Research Fellowship to China. For the next 10 months, Zhu’s temporary academic home is Lanzhou University in Gansu, a less-developed province in northwestern China situated along the ancient Silk Road connecting China and the Mediterranean.
From September 2012 through June 2013, Dr. Zhu will conduct an impact evaluation on the new Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme, a universal health insurance program launched in 2003 for rural residents. The Scheme focuses on health outcomes and a public health service provision.
Dr. Zhu teaches biostatistics in the USF College of Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He also directs the college’s doctorate in biostatistics program and Summer Institute in Biostatistics for undergraduates. His research interests include biostatistics methods for spatial and temporal data, quantitative assessment of health risk due to exposure to air pollutants, pesticides, and industrial chemicals, evaluation of clinical and health outcomes, statistical modeling of biological systems (e.g. PBPK/PD models), Chinese healthcare systems and health disparities in rural and minority populations.

In the past eight years, three other faculty from the College of Public Health received a Fulbright Fellowship. They include Thomas Bernard, PhD, professor of chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, Kay Perrin, PhD, MPH, associate professor and director of undergraduate studies, and Ann DeBaldo, PhD, retired professor and associate dean for international programs.
