New international site for research and field experience in Ethiopia
In April, researchers from the University of South Florida College of Public Health (COPH) traveled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the World Congress of Public Health. While there, Getachew Dagne, PhD, associate professor, Heather Stockwell, ScD, professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Aurora Sanchez-Anguiano, MD, PhD, associate professor and coordinator of international field experience, met with Addis Ababa University (AAU) faculty and administrators to discuss the potential for collaboration.
After months of planning, the COPH recently signed an Agreement for Collaboration with the School of Public Health at AAU in Ethiopia.
The collaboration between the COPH and AAU is mutually beneficial. Initiatives resulting from this partnership for the COPH include international field experience sites for graduate students, as well as opportunities for teaching and research collaboration in the areas of HIV/AIDS, mental health, and communicable and nutritional based diseases commonly found in developing countries such as Ethiopia. Students at AAU have the opportunity to earn online graduate certificates from the COPH in Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology, and Infection Control, among others.
