Moving forward with a new structure, new partner
Today in her “State of the University” address, USF President Judy Genshaft announced that we are proposing a new entity to make it easier for USF Health to align with hospital partners – and that Lakeland Regional Medical Center is proposing to join us as the first true business partner.
This is an exciting development for all our colleges. The first clear win will be the ability to expand our medical residency programs, to become the largest residency program in the state. But every college will have expanded opportunities with LRMC – a hospital with 851 beds and the busiest emergency department in the state.

This doesn’t change our existing affiliations. It does add a platform for creative partnership at a time when independent hospitals are being forced to react to the chains and to the dizzying speed of change in the healthcare system.
The next step is for the USF Board of Trustees to consider the proposal. Lakeland Regional’s board will consider it in the coming week as well. I’ll keep you posted.
