First place innovation goes to COPH student and team

Public health student Ryan Ortega earned first place with his team at the recent Annual Healthcare Innovation & Venture Student Competition, a competition organized by the USF Health Morsani College of medicine.

Students win 1st-place in USFH Healthcare-Innovation-Venture-Comp square

Ortega, a USF College of Public Health student studying global communicable diseases, worked with teammates Michael Bair, a mechanical engineer in the medical device industry, and Robert Bair, an environmental engineering doctoral candidate researching sanitation technologies.

The three earned the first-place spot for creating Sol Sterilis, a solar autoclave used to sterilize medical or research instruments. The innovative invention earned the team $2,000.
