USF Health CAMLS’ TGH COVID-19 Simulation Team Recognized as Culture Champions

USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) stepped up in a time of need to equip Tampa General Hospital’s front line clinical staff with simulation training focused on responding to patients with severe COVID-19 symptoms. CAMLS’ TGH COVID-19 simulation team was made up of Michael Hale, simulation operations specialist, Colleen Reiner, interim director of education, Phillip Wortham, director of operations and technology, and Jarius (JR) Redd, simulation operations specialist. During a staff meeting on September 9th, Haru Okuda, MD, executive director of CAMLS and assistant vice president of the Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice, awarded the simulation team with Culture Coins for exemplifying the values of USF Health.

“The team volunteered outside of their usual comfort zones, demonstrating excellence and grit, to go to TGH to conduct in-situ simulations starting in early April for 12 weeks, at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, through uncertainty potentially increasing their own risk of exposure to COVID-19,” Dr. Okuda said. “They did this because of their compassion and passion for the mission, to help front line clinical staff at TGH who were both scared and anxious in the management of the unknown, the sickest of the COVID-19 patients.  They worked collaboratively across interprofessional teams of doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacist, and administrators to improve the health outcomes of patients and safety of providers in our community.  They were accountable for their actions, ensuring the highest level of safety for our learners through cleaning the simulators, wearing of masks, and enforcing physical distancing. And last but not least, they treated everyone with respect and were inclusive of all participants, and empathetic to their fears and stress, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
