USF Health General Surgeon Selected For The SAGES Foundation 2021 Jeffrey Ponsky Master Educator In Endoscopy Award

Vic Velanovich, MD, division director of general surgery, Reeves/Culverhouse endowed chair of surgery, and professor of surgery in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, has been selected as the recipient of the SAGES Education & Research Foundation’s 2021 Jeffrey Ponsky Master Educator in Endoscopy Award. “This award was established in 2009 to recognize a distinguished SAGES leader who exemplifies Dr. Ponsky’s pioneering leadership spirit and his dedication to surgical endoscopy and education,” Desmond H. Birkett, MD, president of SAGES Education & Research Foundation, said in a letter to Dr. Velanovich. “Your selection as this year’s Ponsky Award honoree was unanimous. I salute your stalwart reputation as an academic surgeon and your impact as a longtime mentor to students, residents, fellows, and faculty alike. Please consider this award an expression of gratitude for your commitment to SAGES and the Foundation as well as the advancement of the goals, ideals, and standards of surgical endoscopy.”

SAGES has eleven major awards, seven of which are open for nomination from the general membership, and four, such as the Ponsky Award, are only open for nomination from SAGES Leadership. Dr. Velanovich will be presented with his award at the 15th Annual SAGES Foundation Awards Luncheon which will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, in Las Vegas. The Annual Awards Luncheon features awards and research grants presented to outstanding surgeons and educators for their work in minimally invasive surgery, raising funds to keep patient safety and surgical innovations in the forefront. As the recipient of the Ponsky Award, Dr. Velanovich will receive roundtrip economy class airfare to Baltimore, two-night complimentary hotel stay, two complimentary tickets to the Awards Luncheon and a $1,000 check from the SAGES Foundation.

The mission of the SAGES Education & Research Foundation is to advance laparoscopic, endoscopic and emerging minimal access surgical methods by supporting reproducible scientific research, graduate and postgraduate education and public information. Their annual ticketed event celebrates and honors distinguished leaders in minimally invasive surgery with proceeds benefiting the SAGES Foundation and its mission.
