Mark your calendar for the 24th Annual USF Health Research Day, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21, at the USF Marshall Student Center.
Few events give so many USF emerging scientists and their mentors the opportunity to shine. This year will showcase a record 350 poster presentations from students, trainees, faculty and staff across all four USF Health colleges, as well as USF collaborators whose research focuses on the science of health.
“I’m always impressed by what our future and existing scientists are doing to advance scholarly knowledge and its application in their disciplines,” said Phillip Marty, PhD, vice president of research for USF Health. “We continue to raise the bar on the quality of the presentations each year.”
The Roy H. Benke Distinguished Lecturer James W. Simpkins, PhD, an expert in the neuroendocrinology of aging, will deliver the research day keynote address at 1 p.m. in the Oval Theatre. His talk is titled “Wandering in Neurodegeneration Research: A Career of Running Against the Wind.”
Dr. Simpson is professor of physiology and pharmacology and director of the Center for Basic and Translational Stroke Research at West Virginia University, in Morgantown, W.V. His laboratory studies the causes of brain damage from age-related diseases, in particular Alzheimer’s disease and stroke, and searches for novel treatments based on an understanding of those causes.
