Public Health’s John Adams, PhD, and Nursing’s Kevin Kip, PhD, FAHA, were each recently named Distinguished University Health Professor, USF Health’s highest recognition for faculty.
Dr. Adams, professor in the Department of Global Health in the USF College of Public Health, joined USF in 2007 and is one of the world’s leading experts on the immunobiology of malaria. He earned his PhD from the University of Illinois and completed further training at the National Institutes of Health studying the molecular mechanisms of malarial infections.
Dr. Kip, professor in the USF College of Nursing, led the team that conducted the first randomized controlled trial on Accelerated Resolution Therapy, or ART, a highly promising treatment for combat-related symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans and U.S. service members. He earned his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh.
“This award is for faculty who have clearly distinguished themselves in their field and are recognized nationally and internationally for their research and scholarly activity,” said Phillip J. Marty, PhD, professor of public health and medicine and associate vice president for USF Health, Office of Research.
“Both Dr. Adams and Dr. Kip are highly deserving of this designation because of their groundbreaking research and the strengths of their scholarly activity throughout their careers.”
Comments from the Recommending Committee included the following:
“By all metrics, his distinguished, well-funded research program addresses major problems in infectious disease and public health,” said one of the committee members about Dr. Adams.
“I just believe a faculty member who teaches well AND is highly productive in research has extraordinary value to USF Health and the University” said another committee member about Dr. Kip, adding that he could be considered a “true triple threat” because of his success in all three missions: research, service and teaching.
The award, established at USF Health in 2006, recognizes senior faculty across all USF Health colleges and programs for their substantial achievements in the areas of teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, clinical care and professional service. Distinguished University Health Professors are nominated, reviewed by external peers, recommended by an internal committee, and then designated by the USF Health Senior Vice President. Distinguished University Health Professors serve as an advisory group for the Vice President of USF Health and President of the University, and provide discussions and counsel on issues affecting the overall academic and scholarly activities and directions of the University.
In addition to receiving a $5,000 base salary adjustment, Dr. Adams and Dr. Kip are invited to give either a university-wide or USF Health address during the academic year, and are granted the State University System title of Distinguished Professor.
