Team Care for Weight Loss

Feeling great about yourself, loving your reflection more every day – a life changing journey toward a healthier you.

That’s the vision of weight-loss surgery through the eyes of the entire team at the TGH+USF Health Bariatric Center, a 6,000 square ft. one-stop care clinic for metabolic surgery and weight management. This highly customized clinic includes an inter-disciplinary team as well as an outpatient clinic and research activities. Conveniently located near downtown across from TGH in the Harborside Medical Tower, this clinic provides care for three hundred patients a week.

Central to its success – and the success of thousands of patients who have beat obesity and its associated conditions – is the multidisciplinary approach that includes the critical peripheral services and long-term support each patient needs to succeed in their weight loss.  The Center’s comprehensive team of bariatric physicians, psychologists, dietitians and exercise physiologists work together to create a customized weight management program for each individual.

“Our team is what makes our program successful, which means our patients succeed,” said Dr. Christopher DuCoin, MD, MPH, FACS, associate professor of surgery and director of the TGH+USF Health Bariatric Center.

TGH+USF Health Bariatric Center

In 2006, the TGH+USF Health Bariatric Center became the first in Tampa to receive accreditation as a Center of Excellence from the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery along with the American College of Surgeons.

In addition, our center was awarded a Comprehensive Center with Adolescent Accreditation under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Team Approach

Our dedicated group of providers and physicians offer medical and surgical weight loss options for both adults and adolescents. The bariatric weight loss process takes six months – long before surgery, the patient and the team work together to look at every aspect of their struggle with obesity: the co-morbid conditions, the eating and exercise habits, and the tendencies and associations with food. Anyone interested in bariatric surgery must attend an informational session held at the Center weekly.

Patients admitted to the program then spend three to six months learning the nuances of what bariatric surgery means – the life-long commitment and dietary regimen they face – before surgery is performed. Our cutting edge, bariatric surgical procedures are performed next door at Tampa General Hospital, making it convenient for patients and their families and provides a continuity of care.

Our patients meet with the all of the following team members at various times:

  • Surgeons
  • Bariatrician (Medical Weight Loss Doctor)
  • Dietitian
  • Psychologist
  • Exercise physiologists
  • Co-Morbid Condition Specialist: Pulmonologist, Cardiologist
  • Adolescent Specialist
  • Adolescent Bariatric Surgeon
  • Nurse Practioner

There are many underlying reasons why people struggle to maintain a healthy weight, and the team at the TGH+USF Health Bariatric Center helps identify and treat these underlying conditions to support a life-long commitment for maintaining a healthy weight, Dr. DuCoin said.

“It takes a dedicated, multi-disciplinary team of specialists to address all aspects of obesity,” he said. “A multi-disciplinary team approach to weight loss is the solution for this Pandemic. Yes, Pandemic. Obesity is a chronic disease that progresses slowly over time. Currently more than 60% of adults are overweight, and obesity is now affecting our children. Our goal is to keep overweight from becoming a new norm. Obesity impacts every organ system, such as the heart, lungs, the liver and the kidneys. It is linked to major disorders such as diabetes and cancer. When we reduce obesity, these other diseases are resolved and sometimes are even cured.”
