Sam Bell, considered the “father of the USF College of Public Health,” has had a pivotal role in advocating for USF Health. Bell has been actively involved with the university throughout his career, including being the first and only chair of the dean’s advisory board for the College of Public Health. A former member of the Florida House of Representatives, Bell is also married to former USF President Betty Castor.

Together, Bell and Castor continue to be devoted supporters of USF Health and the College of Public Health. They established a scholarship fund for graduate public health students serving in Uganda. In 2018, the USF Alumni Association presented Bell with the Class of ’56 Award, a distinction presented annually to non-alumni who provide notable contributions to both the university and the community.
