National Public Health Week is sponsored by the American Public Health Association.  Since 1995, the group declared the first week in April as “a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving our nation’s health.”

Eat well.

The system that keeps food safe and healthy is complex, but public health is here to identify good choices. Join members of the college community for a series of health fairs and National Eating Disorders Association Awareness Walk on April 6.

Be the healthiest nation in one generation.

April 7 is World Health Day. Join the Global Health Student Association around noon and learn how the college is combatting vector-borne and other infectious diseases. At 5pm, the college hosts a screening of Invisible Threat, a compelling video on vaccine preventable diseases. Best practices for community health come from around the globe and USF.

Get out ahead.

Prevention is now a nationwide priority. Look to public health for ways to fit in. The college hosts a Networking Fair on April 9.  Meet with employers showcasing how they make the world a safer and healthier place for everyone.

Be healthy from the start.

From maternal health and school nutrition to emergency preparedness, public health starts at home. Let the College of Public Health demonstrate how.  On April 11, the Maternal and Child Health Student Organization hosts the 5th Annual Research Symposium: “Dads Count Too.” The Join them for a few sessions or stay all day and learn initiatives to involve men in the childbirth and childrearing experience.

Don’t panic.

Disaster preparedness starts with community-wide commitment and action. From academic programs to one-time trainings, the College of Public Health helps communities weather the unexpected.  Attend a free Community Emergency Response Team Course on April 12 and participate in a full day of workshops and exercises pertaining to preparedness for hurricanes and other disasters.
