September 2012 Undergraduate Student recipient: Deborah Merritt

Deborah Merritt has worked five years with Hillsborough County Supplemental Education Services tutoring children who are at risk for grade retention and dropping out of school. This program was created to reach out to children who screened the highest risk in failing grades on the FCAT. Deborah works with many students who are learning English as their second language; she has self-taught herself Spanish to be a more effective instructor. Moreover, Deborah has donated activity books, flash cards, and Spanish computer software for nine children who were held back in their grades multiple times because of their English. Deborah has volunteered last month extra time with children and their parents at a community library to train both the children and parents on how to use the Spanish computer software. The computers have enabled the children to practice English at home.
