Diana Mistry and Kelly Wier Receive Student of the Month Community Service Award
November 2011 Undergraduate Student recipient: Diana Mistry
Diana volunteered at the 2011 Annual Flu Shot Drive held at the College of Public Health with the USF Health Service Corps. She administered flu shots to USF employees and students, and members of the community for free. Diana also participated in the Bone Marrow Registry Drive sponsored by the USF Chapter Florida Nursing Student’s Association (FNSA) held at the USF College of Nursing. This drive encouraged everyone to sign up for the registry in the hope that they could be a potential bone marrow match for someone with a life-threatening affliction and have the chance to save their life. Furthermore, Diana volunteered at the 2011 Annual ‘I Am Too Good for Drugs’ Walk and Kidfest at MOSI. Over 4,500 children and families participated in this free one day event that included a banner contest, one-mile fun walk, and fun activities.
November 2011 Graduate Student recipient: Kelly Wier
Kelly finds the time to serve and contribute for the benefit of those around her even in a demanding program such as the Nurse Anesthesia program at USF. She volunteered at the Halloween Festivities held at the Shriner’s Hospital for Children Tampa, a pediatric hospital dedicated to providing free treatment to children with a variety of orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions. During the Halloween Festivities, patients of the hospital, who may have otherwise had no Halloween due to their health conditions, were able to trick-or-treat through the hospital units, participate in costume contests, enjoy entertainment provided by the staff, and attend a Halloween party. Most recently Kelly decided to get the Nurse Anesthesia program involved in the Great American Teach In. Because of her efforts, several students of the Nurse Anesthesia program traveled to several schools in the Tampa area to provide inspiration to children and educate them on the health profession.
