Marilyn Velez Receives Student of the Month Community Service Award
The University of South Florida College of Nursing Student of the Month Community Service Award is given monthly and recognizes students who volunteer in the community outside of their nursing program requirements. The College wants to recognize those students who make the effort and take time to give back to the community.
October 2011 Undergraduate Student recipient: Marilyn Velez
Marilyn is a regular volunteer nurse at St. Thomas Aquinas Medical Clinic in Osceola County. The free clinic provides care to clients who do not receive Medicaid or Medicare and cannot afford medical insurance. Marilyn routinely takes vital signs and pertinent health information as clients are checked into the clinic. Additionally, she helps ensure flow from check-in to discharge of clients seen at the clinic as well as providing translation for the Hispanic clients who do not speak English. In trying to ensure the highest quality and standards of care, she has also participated in the development of nursing specific guidelines for clinic personnel.
