Mistry and Llerena Receive Student of the Month Community Service Awards
The University of South Florida College of Nursing Student of the Month Community Service Award is given monthly and recognizes students who volunteer in the community outside of their nursing program requirements. The College wants to recognize those students who make the effort and take time to give back to the community.
May 2011 Undergraduate Student recipient: Diana Mistry
Diana volunteered for the Hillsborough Homeless Coalition Veteran’s Stand Down this month. The Stand Down is based on the military practice of providing soldiers a time away from the front lines to be able to renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being. Likewise, the Homeless Stand Down provided our homeless neighbors with access to services offered by dozens of agencies including wellness exams and health screenings, access to service programs and resources, a warm meal, haircuts, and a few hours out of the hot Florida sun.
Diana also actively participated in community service on Saturday May 7th, National Rebuilding Day to bring attention to the plight of America’s low-income homeowners and the communities in which they live by spending the entire morning painting and cleaning the low-income neighborhood houses.
Furthermore, Diana volunteered for the Miles for Moffitt, an annual walk/run held during Make May Moffitt Month. Money is raised for Cancer research on this day and this year it celebrated Moffitt’s 25th anniversary.
May 2011 Graduate Student recipient: June Llerena
June volunteer at the Judeo Christian Health Clinic. She performed nursing functions and assisted the nurse practitioner with direct patient care. She also participated in starting and instructing a diabetes education class. Additionally, she has been updating patient education materials, and has developed a community health education bulletin board. This past month she also worked at the clinics annual fundraiser dinner to benefit the clinic.
