Nursing Students Presented IPE Certificates for Completion of Inaugural USF Health IPE Workgroup Instructional Series

During the Spring 2012 semester, 26 University of South Florida College of Nursing students participated in the inaugural offering of the Interprofessional Education instructional series conducted by the USF Health Interprofessional Education Workgroup. The Workgroup includes members representing the College of Nursing, Morsani College of Medicine Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Athletic Training Program, College of Pharmacy and the School of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Sciences. The three-part series covered information on the roles & responsibilities of healthcare disciplines, taught communication skills and techniques as well as engaged the students in teamwork activities.

Students from Nursing, Pharmacy and Athletic Training participated in the series. Nursing students registered in the NUR 4827C Leadership & Management in Professional Nursing Practice course were eligible to participate in the IPE Sessions. Each session was 3 hours in length and could count towards nursing students’ required leadership hours. The College of Nursing awarded IPE Certificates to the nursing students who participated in all 3 sessions.

“These certificates acknowledge the student’s participation in this inaugural event. Two students informed me that while participating in a phone interview with a potential employer, they mentioned their experience with the IPE instructional sessions,” said Director of the USF College of Nursing George & Marian Miller Virtual Simulation Center of Excellence, Marisa Belote, RN, BSN, MBA. “Not only do our students benefit from this learning experience, the patients entrusted to their care will receive the ultimate benefit.”
