U.S. News and World Report Ranks Nurses as #1 Job for 2012

Almost every Americans’ lives are touched at some point by the skilled hands of nurses. There are 3 million nurses in the nation today who interact with patients of all ages and cultures, in virtually every healthcare setting. The demand and the opportunities for nursing employment remain at a high level.

U.S News & World Report shows nursing is a top healthcare job and the No. 1 career for 2012 in the U.S., according to their article on The Best Jobs of 2012 list. The report shows, solid employment growth and a wide range of job prospects help make nursing No. 1 job for 2012.

“Even in a tough economy, nursing has flourished compared with most other occupations,” reports U.S. News & World Report in the article. “Thanks in part to an aging population, job growth is expected to be much faster than the national average.”

The United State Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics projects registered nurse employment growth of 26 percent between 2010 and 2020, adding 711,900 more positions. The expected growth is faster than other occupations.

“Growth will occur primarily because of technological advancements; an increased emphasis on preventative care; and the large, aging baby-boomer population who will demand more healthcare services as they live longer and more active lives,” reports U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Similarly, the Personal Advice Finance and Business Forecast website, Kiplinger.com, ranked nursing No. 2 in their 10 Best College Majors for a Lucrative Career article in August 2012.

“Nursing has always made for a steady, well-paid career, but it’s looking especially good as baby-boomers age. Demand for nurses is way up, so unemployment, even among new grads, is down.” reports the Kiplinger.com article.
