USF College of Nursing’s Office of Research & Innovation hosts Discovery Café event
University of South Florida College of Nursing’s Office of Research and Innovation held a Discovery Café type event on Sept. 13, 2013 for faculty members to explore ideas on research.
The Discovery Café, hosted by USF College of Nursing Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Innovation, Cindy L. Munro, PhD, RN, ANP-BC, FAAN, is based on a simple, effective, and flexible group dialogue methodology created by the World Café Community Foundation.

“This round-table and conversation-based event helps our faculty engage in conversation about things that matter,” Dr. Munro said. “This format has really helped our faculty think outside-the-box while they’re at ease and enjoying each-other’s company.”

The World Café, founded by a small group of business and academic leaders in 1995, created the Discovery Café model to help organize and support collaborative conversation world-wide. This model is comprised of five components: setting, welcome and introduction, small group rounds, questions, and discussion. The special environment is created with small round tables covered with uneven tablecloths, butcher block paper, colored pens, a vase of flowers, and light music in the background.
Organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and many other institutions currently use the Discovery Café method. USF College of Nursing adopted this method in 2011.

This year, USF College of Nursing faculty members discussed future research and the College’s current priorities including RESTORE LIVES: Research and Education to Rehabilitate and Restore the Lives of Veterans, Service members and their Families, POWER with Nursing: Partnership Opportunities for Wellness, INFORM: Education and Research Institute for Nursing Faculty Recruitment, Retention and Mentoring, and Center for Living with Chronic Illness. Faculty also discussed future grants that will help drive innovation at the College. Dr. Munro used a set of questions to encourage discussion.

“For the last three years, the Discovery Café has helped our office tremendously,” Dr. Munro said. “Every year, we receive great ideas and feedback from faculty, which help shape our Research and Innovation office and the direction that we take. This year, we had the chance to discuss the College’s shared mission in research, and where we want to go as a group moving forward.”
