USF Nursing Student, Crystal Chapman Lambert, receives Sigma Theta Tau International grant

PhD student and McKnight Doctoral Fellow at the University of South Florida College of Nursing, Crystal Chapman Lambert, MS, FNP-BC, NP-C, received the 2011 Sigma Theta Tau International/Virginia Henderson Clinical Research Grant from Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society of Nursing. The award encourages research career development of clinically based nurses.

The grant will allow Lambert to conduct research on HIV-infected women’s knowledge, perceived susceptibility and seriousness of cervical cancer. The $5,000 grant will cover the cost of supplies and compensation, in the form of gift cards, for research participants.

Lambert said that she is honored and grateful to receive the grant, which will allow her to conduct research for her dissertation and expand on previously researched interventions.

“This opportunity will strengthen my resume, increase the probability that I will attain more funding, hopefully NIH funding, and motivate me to continue to investigate unique research ideas,” Lambert said.

Lambert also said the STTI grant will benefit USF Nursing by advancing the science of nursing and preparing the nursing leaders of tomorrow.

“Having a student as a recipient demonstrates the College of Nursing’s tenacity toward both academic and professional student success,” Lambert said.

Recently, Lambert presented research on cervical cancer screening in HIV-infected women during the 2012 USF Health Research Day. The annual event showcased the work of 340 graduate and postgraduate students, residents, faculty and staff from throughout USF Health and across campus. Lambert’s grant funding will take effect June 1, 2012, and will continue through May 31, 2013.
