USF Nursing students participate in Gasparilla Health & Fitness Expo event
Once again this year, University of South Florida College of Nursing students were out in full force volunteering for Tampa’s Annual Gasparilla Distance Classic running race and Gasparilla Health & Fitness Expo event held at the Tampa Convention Center on March 3, 2012.
Students, Sara Jo Spears and Sheri Teeples, were among those who took part in the USF Heath Services Corps activities at the annual event. Spears and Teeples were part of the USF Health team, which assisted Tampa General Hospital (TGH) with its health screening areas performing blood sugar, blood cholesterol, and blood pressure screening activities.

Another group of USF Nursing students assisted TGH’s Emergency Department with triage and observation of the race participants. The students partnered with TGH nurses to identify and learn how to intervene when an emergency occurs. The students also escorted runners to the Emergency Department if a problem was identified.

“Thank you to all the students, faculty and staff who volunteer at community events as College of Nursing representative throughout the year,” Dean Dianne Morrison-Beedy, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, FNAP, FAANP, FAAN said. “You do us all proud. Go Bulls!”
The Gasparilla Health & Fitness Expo is an annual event, which includes some of the Tampa Bay area’s leading health and fitness professionals who help people make better health choices for healthier and fitter lifestyles.
USF College of Nursing is always proud to see students, faculty, and staff stay active in the community. Therefore, everyone is highly encouraged to notify our communication team about any community involvements, events or accomplishments.
