Tampa Bay Times: For Pinellas’ new health director, the patient is ‘the whole population’ /mcom/tampa-bay-times-for-pinellas-new-health-director-the-patient-is-the-whole-population/ Fri, 15 Jan 2016 14:15:01 +0000 /mcom/?p=552 Choe The Tampa Bay Times recently published an article on Dr. Ulyee Choe’s appointment to the position of Director of the Pinellas Health Department. The article notes that when Dr. Choe was selected for the position in August it was more than a promotion, it was a homecoming. Dr. Choe’s family moved from Kuwait City to Clearwater Beach when he was a child and he has called Pinellas home ever since. As such, this appointment is especially meaningful to Dr. Choe who notes in the article, “My heart is here.”

With the health of the whole Pinellas population in mind, Dr. Choe has big plans as he settles into the job. Following the Pinellas County Community Health Improvement Plan, Dr. Choe aims to make behavioral health a priority, improve overall access to care, and help Pinellas residents achieve a healthy weight.

SPRINT Trials: Study indicates lower target blood pressure greatly reduces cardiovascular complications and deaths in older adults /mcom/sprint-trials-study-indicates-lower-target-blood-pressure-greatly-reduces-cardiovascular-complications-and-deaths-in-older-adults/ Tue, 20 Oct 2015 15:38:01 +0000 /mcom/?p=527 Hypertension S.P.R.I.N.T. studyUSF Health was one of multiple sites across the country participating in a large-scale study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to determine if using multiple targeted medications to reduce the systolic blood pressure in certain patients to less than 120 mmHg would be beneficial. The study, titled The Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT), was scheduled to take place over a five year period, but was halted in its fourth year when it became clear patients did indeed benefit from a lower target mmHg.

The USF Health team, headed by USF site Principal Investigator Dr. Ramon Lopez Del valle from the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, studied 54 of the 9,361 participants. The USF team earned honorary awards for their performance and compliance in the study.Read more about this study here.
